Rancho Notorious

Marlene Dietrich in a Western? She’s the former dancehall queen Altar Keane, who presides over Chuck-a-Luck, which looks like a ranch but operates as a hideout for a colorful roster of outlaws. When cowboy Vern Haskell (Arthur Kennedy) lands there in search of the man who robbed and murdered his fiancé, Keane warns him that she has only one rule: “Don’t ask questions.” But that’s not how our hero is wired. This is a different kind of Western, shot on the studio lot with a distinctive claustrophobic feel, by noir master Fritz Lang.

This film is part of the Saddle Up Saturdays with Jonathan Demme series.
