Disney’s Queen of Katwe is the colorful true story of a 10-year-old girl named Phiona whose world is turned upside down when she is introduced to the game of chess. Phiona works tirelessly with her mother (played by Oscar winner and Tony nominee Lupita Nyong’o) selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda when one day she encounters a missionary named Robert (David Oyelowo, Selma) who teaches local children how to play chess. Phiona is captivated and immediately shows potential. Robert convinces Phiona to begin participating in local tournaments, but her mother becomes reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. However, Phiona (with Robert as her mentor) perseveres, determined to fulfill her extraordinary potential in hopes of escaping poverty and saving her family. The newest feature from filmmaker Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), Queen of Katwe is a skillful, vibrant, and uplifting underdog tale.
