Primetime Preacher$

Q&A with filmmaker Joe Berlinger

Primetime Preacher$, from Academy Award nominee Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost; Metallica: Some Kind of Monster) investigates the greed, ego, and rivalry that was building behind the pulpit during the golden age of televangelism.

In the 1980s, three of the most powerful televangelists in America – Jim Bakker, Jerry Falwell, and Jimmy Swaggart – harnessed the power of television to build vast media ministries, reaching millions of viewers during coveted primetime hours and turning everyday preachers into household names. As these religious programs grew into international broadcasting empires built in God’s name, these men transformed evangelical Christianity from a largely nonpartisan movement into a powerful force in American politics whose influence still reverberates today. When a shocking and very public sex scandal erupted, it ignited an all-out holy war among the three men — one that captivated the nation and exposed what lay beneath the empires they’d built.

  • Academy Award and eight-time Emmy nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger is one of the leading nonfiction filmmakers of his generation and a pioneer in the genre of true crime documentaries. He has directed and produced landmark films such as: Brother’s Keeper, a Sundance and DGA Award-winner that broke new ground with its narrative storytelling techniques, Under African Skies, an Emmy-winning A&E Indie film about Paul Simon’s controversial recording of the seminal Graceland album during South Africa’s Apartheid regime, and Some Kind of Monster, an intimate portrait of Metallica that redefined the rockumentary genre and won the Independent Spirit Award. His Paradise Lost Trilogy, an HBO feature documentary series that led to the 2011 release of the wrongfully convicted West Memphis 3 after 18 and a half years on Arkansas’ death row, earned Berlinger multiple Emmy and Peabody awards, as well as an Academy Award nomination.
