Shortly after World War II, the comedy duo Shimon Dzigan and Israel Schumacher returned home to their native Poland from a Soviet labor camp. In 1948, they made Our Children, one of the very first films to directly address the experience and aftermath of the Holocaust. Starting with newsreel footage of Auschwitz, the film then shows Dzigan and Schumacher at an orphanage, performing skits about pre-war life in the Warsaw ghetto. The children in the audience object to the sentimentality of the skits, and go on to describe their real struggles to survive the occupation. Showing how theater and storytelling can provide catharsis and understanding, Our Children also includes a delightful play-within-the-film performance of a Sholom Aleichem story.

The film will be shown on a 35mm print restored by the National Center for Jewish Film.

"Our Children is not only among the first films about the Holocaust, it is also the first to critique its representation.”
J. Hoberman, Bridge of Light: Yiddish Film Between Two Worlds
“The movie, centered on the importance of remembrance, was itself in danger of being forgotten. Restored by the National Center for Jewish Film in 1991, it still deserves to be better known.”
Zachary Barnes, Wall Street Journal
