Once in a Lifetime tells the true story of an extraordinary history teacher, Anne Gueguen (played beautifully by Ariane Ascaride), who is determined to overcome the apathy of her inner-city high school pupils and give them the best education she can. She comes up with a novel assignment: They must enter a national writing competition on the theme of child victims of the Nazi concentration camps. This idea is not met with enthusiasm, but when they meet a Holocaust survivor, the students, who come from a wide variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, suddenly begin to see one another—and themselves—in a whole new light. This powerful film demonstrates the enduring impact of the Holocaust in its ability to enlighten future generations.
