Network

7:00 screening followed by a Q&A with Film Critic Sheila O'Malley

When veteran anchorman Howard Beale (Peter Finch, in his Academy Award-winning final role) is forced to retire his 25-year post because of his age, he announces to viewers that he will take his own life during his farewell broadcast. After his fanatical tirade results in a massive ratings spike, network executives rethink their decision. Also starring Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Ned Beatty, Robert Duvall, and Beatrice Straight, Network was nominated for ten Academy Awards.

"What is most insightful about Network is... not that corporations show propaganda as news. Not that they’re in control the whole time. Not that they run everything. It is that they only survive as long as people tune in and give them that power, and Network shows that, for the most part, we’re all too happy to do so. It truly was a film way ahead of its time."
The Film Magazine, Kieran Judge
