Based on interviews with 200 women, Much Loved is an honest, poignant, and raucous portrayal of the prostitution scene in Marrakesh. It focuses on four upmarket sex workers, the family they create, and the dangerous line they’re forced to tread as they live on the edges of society. In the tumult that ensued after some clips appeared online this spring, filmmaker Nabil Ayouch and his leading actress both received death threats, and the film was quickly condemned and banned in Morocco. Ayouch is a former JBFC International Fellow, who showed his Oscar-nominated Horses of God here in 2014—the first screening in this country!—before our own Jonathan Demme helped bring it to American screens.
