Mother

Mother, from acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho (Memories of Murder, Parasite), follows a woman referred to only as ‘Mother’ as she goes to extreme lengths to protect her precious only son.

The unnamed widow (Kim Hye-ja) is a devoted single parent to her simple-minded twenty-seven-year-old son, Do-joon (Won-bin). A constant source of anxiety for his mother, Do-joon behaves in foolish or simply dangerous ways. One night while walking home drunk, he encounters a schoolgirl, whom he follows until she disappears into a dark alley. The next morning, she is found dead in an abandoned building—and Do-joon is accused of her murder. An inefficient lawyer and an apathetic police force result in a speedy conviction, but his mother refuses to believe her beloved son is guilty, and immediately undertakes her own investigation to find the girl’s killer. In her obsessive quest to clear her son’s name, ‘Mother’ steps into a world of unimaginable chaos and shocking revelations.

This Mother’s Day season at the JBFC, celebrate the unbreakable bond between mother and child with our suspenseful screenings of thrilling classics Psycho and Mother.

"A subtle, yet no less visceral, horror-comedy, fully worthy of its primal title."
J. Hoberman, Village Voice
"The hard-pounding heart of Mother, Ms. Kim is a wonderment. Perched on the knife edge between tragedy and comedy, her delivery gives the narrative... much of its momentum."
Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
