Q&A with director Luke Lorentzen and White Plains Hospital professionals Dr. Farrukh N. Jafri and Dr. Daniel Schwartz

• Luke Lorentzen is an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. His most recent film, A Still Small Voice (2023), follows a chaplain completing a year-long hospital residency. The film won the U.S. Documentary Best Director Award at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, was listed as one of the best ten films of the year by The New York Times, and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Luke’s previous film Midnight Family (2019) was also shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature after winning over 35 awards from film festivals and organizations around the world, including a Special Jury Award for Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival, Best Editing from the International Documentary Association, and the Golden Frog for Best Documentary from Camerimage. In 2024, the film was adapted into a 10-part fictionalized series for Apple TV+. Luke’s other work as a director and cinematographer includes the Netflix original series Last Chance U (2019), which won an Emmy for Outstanding Serialized Sports Documentary. With Kellen Quinn, Luke is a co-founder of the independent production company Hedgehog Films.
• Farrukh N. Jafri, MD, PhD, MS-HPEd, FACEP, is the Medical Director of WPH Cares at White Plains Hospital, an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Adjunct Faculty at the Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions. At WPH Cares, he designs and leads virtual care programs—including remote patient monitoring, community paramedicine, tele-pharmacy, and a virtual acute care clinic—that connect patients to the services they need after leaving the hospital, with a focus on underserved communities across Westchester. His research spans digital health, artificial intelligence, and implementation science, all aimed at improving patient safety and keeping vulnerable patients healthy at home.
• Dr. Daniel Schwartz is the Assistant Director of EMS and Emergency Preparedness at White Plains Hospital. He received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Completed his Residency in Emergency Medicine at LIJ/Northshore Hospitals as well as a fellowship in Emergency Medical Services with the Fire Department of New York. He also serves as the Medical Director for Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corp. as well as Portchester-Rye-Ryebrook EMS.
