Lingua Franca

Followed by a Q&A with Director Isabel Sandoval and Author Marya E. Gates

Following the screening and Q&A, author Marya E. Gates will sell and sign copies of her book Cinema Her Way: Visionary Female Directors in Their Own Words, which features Isabel Sandoval as a subject, courtesy of The Village Bookstore in Pleasantville.

Isabel Sandoval’s third feature film Lingua Franca is a love story between an undocumented, transgender, Filipina caregiver and a Russian-Jewish slaughterhouse worker in Brooklyn, New York. The film world premiered at Giornate degli Autori/Venice Days and was the first Filipino film in main-competition at BFI London in its 63-year history. Lingua Franca was also an official selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival.

"Lingua Franca—which made a splash at the Venice Film Festival last year, the first film by a trans woman to be featured at the festival—is a gorgeous and delicate picture, an understated work that opens a window on an intimate world."

  • Isabel Sandoval is recognized as “one of the most exciting and multitalented filmmakers on the indie scene with a bold approach to cinematic style” by The Criterion Collection. Meanwhile The Museum of Modern Art has recognized her as a “rarity among the young generation of Filipino filmmakers.” She has directed four feature films including Señorita, which premiered at Locarno and the critically acclaimed Lingua Franca, which premiered in Venice and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. In 2022 she starred in the César Award-winning short film Maria Schneider 1983 and was invited to join the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She writes, edits, directs and stars in Moonglow, a noir-tinged romantic drama set in the '70s, slated to premiere in 2025.
  • Marya E. Gates is a freelance film writer and critic based in Chicago with an expertise in silent film, film noir, and female directors. She has a BA in Comparative Literature and an MFA in film production. Before turning to writing full-time, she worked in social media marketing and editorial in the film industry.
