“One of the best, and most surprising, films of the year.” (The Atlantic)
“Exact and exacting, made with formidable skill and unwavering focus, “Lady Macbeth” is a film that demands to be admired.” (Los Angeles Times)
Set in the sprawling countryside of Victorian England, Lady Macbeth is the story of a young woman named Katherine—newcomer Florence Pugh (The Falling)—who, at the age of 17, is married off to a bitter man twice her age and sent to live on his estate. Stifled by a husband who makes it immediately clear he has no interest in her, Katherine spends her days bored, alone, and feeling completely powerless. That is until she crosses paths with a handsome young farm hand (Cosmo Jarvis, Monochrome, The Habit of Beauty) and embarks on a passionate and reckless affair. Fueled by lust and a newfound urgency, Katherine stops at nothing to get what she wants, triggering a series of increasingly devastating events in the process. Lady Macbeth marks the promising film debut of theater director William Oldroyd and features a fantastic breakout performance from Pugh as well as stunning cinematography from DP Ari Wegner.
