Brigitte Bardot was already in the public eye in the 1950s, mostly known for scantily clad appearances in comedies and romances, but The Truth, directed by the masterly Clouzot and nominated for the Best Foreign Language Oscar, was something different. Bardot’s success in her first serious role—as a woman on trial for the murder of her former boyfriend—made critics take notice. Adding to that, the film played off Bardot’s public image, and—with the tabloids reporting her nervous breakdowns, marriage-ending affair, and subsequent suicide attempt—La Vérité became her highest-grossing film.
