In 18th-century France, novice Suzanne (Anna Karina, Vivre Sa Vie) is forced to take her vows and become a nun. As she does what she can to resist, Suzanne is shuttled between convents with Mother Superiors who range from maternal to sadistic to amorous. Based on the novel by Denis Diderot, Jacques Rivette’s 1966 film, considered “one of the cornerstones of the French New Wave” by critic Jonathan Rosenbaum, was banned upon its initial release and quickly became the scandal du jour.
