Knives Out

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay

Knives Out?! Yes, yes, I know some of you are saying: why should we be playing a film that doesn’t quite sound like an art film? Well, because it might be the smartest, snappiest, sassiest film we’ve seen here in a long time, just a sheer entertainment in a throwback sort of way—and underneath it all, it may even be saying something too (just a little). So we thought, hey, let’s just do it for the holidays. It’s two more hours you won’t have to talk to members of your family! Enjoy!–JBFC Programming Director Brian Ackerman

When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. With an all-star ensemble cast including Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, and Lakeith Stanfield, acclaimed writer and director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, The Last Jedi) pays tribute to Agatha Christie in this witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep you guessing until the very end.

"A crackling, devious, and hugely satisfying old-school whodunnit with a modern twist...See it with the biggest crowd you can find."
Kate Erbland, Indiewire
"Directing a wildly charismatic cast who are all-in on what he's doing, Johnson confidently stays a step or two ahead of his audience, leaving them breathless but satisfied at the end."
Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
"...an intricate puzzle-box narrative worthy of the genre's brainiest practitioners."
Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
