Terrence Malick’s newest feature is a surreal and poetic exploration of one man’s restlessness and struggle for meaning. Christian Bale (American Hustle, The Fighter) plays Rick, a successful screenwriter living a life of excess in Los Angeles. Rick fends off mounting feelings of disillusionment through a string of romantic adventures with six women, including his ex-wife, played by Cate Blanchett, a young model (Freida Pinto), and an old flame, now married (Natalie Portman). Along the way, Rick’s journey is complicated by troubled relationships with his father (Brian Dennehy) and brother (Wes Bentley). “Knight of Cups is one of the great recent bursts of cinematic artistry, a carnival of images and sounds that have a sensual beauty, of light and movement, of gesture and inflection, rarely matched in any movie that isn’t Malick’s own.” (Richard Brody, The New Yorker)
