Adapted from the 2008 Philip Roth novel of the same name, Indignation is the story of Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Fury), a working class Jewish boy from Newark, NJ who is offered a scholarship at a small, conservative college in Ohio. Grateful for the opportunity to escape the Korean war and the suffocating attention of his parents, Marcus throws himself into his studies. He avoids his roommates and the advances of the sole Jewish fraternity on campus, firmly declaring himself an atheist. Marcus soon becomes infatuated with his classmate, Olivia (Sarah Gadon, Belle, Map to the Stars), whose sexual maturity and forthrightness challenges his own prudish upbringing. As Marcus struggles to make sense of his romantic feelings, his frustrations are compounded by clashes with the university’s imposing dean (played by actor and playwright, Tracy Letts), a relationship that culminates in a riveting tête-à-tête. Indignation marks the directorial debut of renowned producer, and former Focus Features CEO, James Schamus. This first feature is a beautifully realized exploration of 1950s repression and conformity and the often tragic consequences for those unwilling or unable to fit in.
