The Wonderful Kingdom of Papa Alaev, a charming new documentary by Greenhouse directors Tal Bardas and Noam Pinchas, is a modern-day Shakespearean tale about a famous Tajik musical family: seven grandchildren, two sons, a daughter—and one Papa Alaev, a gifted musician, divine raconteur, ex-wrestler, sometimes-drunk, and the indisputable leader of the tribe. Papa rules his celebrated folk music clan with an iron tambourine. Beginning with the unilateral decision to immigrate to Israel after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the gifted musician micromanages nearly every aspect of their lives, both on stage and off. As he is about to turn 80 and the generations clash over new musical directions, competing personal interests, and family issues, the show must go on—but who will lead the band?
