“Compelling and elegantly crafted throughout, and hugely evocative—though never in a falsely idealizing way—of an enclosed world with its own lore and beliefs.” (Screen Daily)
In a remote monastery nestled in the ravishing jungle mountains of northeast Myanmar (Burma), life cycles peacefully and predictably for four young Buddhist monks—until their teacher departs on a long journey from which he may never return. As the boys learn to fend for themselves, ghostly phenomena and other strange and magical occurrences begin to take place, threatening to unravel the fabric of the young monks’ reality. This spiritual coming-of-age story, shot entirely in Myanmar with non-actors (three of the boys are played by actual novice Buddhist monks), is a profoundly lyrical drama about life, death, and spirituality.
