Faces Places

Intro by JBFC Programmer Karen Sloe Goodman

“This mesmerizing documentary captures the boundless imagination and indomitable spirit of filmmaker Agnès Varda, who has been one of my idols since her auspicious start as a rare and unforgettable female voice of the French New Wave. This is a film to be seen and celebrated by everyone!” – Karen Goodman, Film Programmer

Legendary filmmaker Agnès Varda (Cleo from 5 to 7) and acclaimed French photographer and muralist JR team up to co-direct this enchanting documentary. In spite of their age difference (Varda is a spirited 89, JR a suave 33) the two artists are kindred spirits and their unlikely friendship frames their journey through the French countryside. Keeping in line with JR’s open air photography galleries, the two meet with local townspeople, listen to their stories, and photograph them–ultimately creating enormous portraits to prominently display on houses, barns, storefronts and trains–revealing the humanity in their subjects and immortalizing their stories.

This film is part of the Programmers' Picks 2018 series.
