I’m a sucker for films about making movies, especially when they come with as much heart and laughs as Craig Brewer’s criminally underseen biographical comedy, Dolemite Is My Name. Eddie Murphy triumphs as hilarious force of nature Rudy Ray Moore, and the film features the most stacked cast of any film in 2019—yes, even more than Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood or The Irishman. There’s also a performance from Wesley Snipes unlike anything you’ve seen him do before. I laughed ‘til my sides hurt and when it was all over, had even shed a few tears. This is something you may have missed on Netflix and I’m so excited to be able to bring it to the JBFC for this screening. – Andrew Jupin, Senior Programmer
Academy Award-nominee Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls) portrays real-life legend Rudy Ray Moore, a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon. The film follows Moore from humble beginnings as a nightclub emcee, and through his outrageous and hysterical journey to achieve his dream: make a film that he himself would like to see on the Big Screen—and maybe achieve a bit of fame and some money along the way.
