The impressive Dégradé was made by a pair of twin filmmakers from Gaza who had never set foot in a movie theater (there have been no real movie theaters there for decades)—until their film was accepted in the Critics’ Week at Cannes. The plot involves two hairdressers and 10 customers of various ages and backgrounds who spend the day trapped in a beauty salon while street violence boils over outside. The cast, including Hiam Abbas (Munich, The Visitor), features terrific ensemble acting as the women rely on humor, frustration, anger, and personal strength to deal with living with the violence just outside their door.
