In the hands of filmmaker Justin Schein, this thoroughly engrossing documentary about his father Harvey Schein’s obsession with the estate tax becomes something much larger; a family saga, a story about the promise and pitfalls of the American dream, and a first-hand look at the conflict between a father and son with different ideas about income inequality. Harvey Schein rose from poverty in Depression-era Brooklyn to great success in the music industry at Sony. The same qualities that made him such a success would also lead to deep rifts within his family. Joy Schein, a lifelong modern dancer who married Harvey Schein in the early 1960s (and later divorced him), and is the filmmaker’s mother, will join us for the post-film conversation.
