Christine

Tenth Anniversary screening—Q&A with actor Rebecca Hall and director Antonio Campos

Revisiting a true story of on-air drama that eerily foreshadowed the movie Network by a year, Christine stars a mesmerizing Rebecca Hall as Florida TV reporter Christine Chubbuck, whose drive to succeed gets complicated by inter-office competition and a tumultuous home life. With ratings in the cellar, the station manager (Tracy Letts) issues a mandate to deliver juicier and more exploitative stories, which is completely at odds with Christine’s principled brand of issue-based journalism. Director – and former Jacob Burns Film Center Artist in Residence – Antonio Campos uncannily recreates a hyper-local 1970s newsroom and builds toward a shocking conclusion that, thanks in large part to Hall’s haunting performance, proves impossible to shake.

"The film's compassion towards Chubbuck emanates from a star turn of huge sensitivity: Hall's version of her is a crumbling person, not a concept."
Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph (UK)
"[Christine] is a thrumming, heartsore, sometimes viciously funny character study, sensitive both to the singularities of Chubbuck’s psychological collapse and the indignities weathered by any woman in a 1970s newsroom."
Guy Lodge, Variety
