“One of the most gifted, and intrepid players in all of jazz” (Time)
The late Charlie Haden, a National Endowment for the Arts jazz master, had his musical beginnings in Iowa, where he sang on his family’s radio show. By the late 1950s, still in his early twenties, he was playing bass with the original Ornette Coleman Quartet. Haden would go on to record seminal albums with John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett, and Pat Metheny, and to lead his own Quartet West and Liberation Music Orchestra. This absorbing documentary spans Haden’s career, from musician, bandleader, and composer to educator and ardent political activist. (First screened, Jazz Sessions 2014)
