In this loose remake of the classic Jacques Tourneur horror film of the same name, Schrader moves the story from 1940s New York City to 1980s New Orleans where Irena (Nastassja Kinski; Paris, Texas) meets her older brother (Malcolm McDowell, A Clockwork Orange) for the first time since they were separated following their parents’ death. As Irena begins to settle into her brother’s home, he suddenly vanishes. Meanwhile, a giant cat is captured after mauling a prostitute. With the animal under observation by a team of zoologists—John Heard (Cutter’s Way), Annette O’Toole (48 Hrs.) and Ed Begley Jr. (A Mighty Wind)—Irena finds herself inexplicably drawn to the cat and winds up getting a job at the zoo, setting her on a collision course with a centuries-old family secret that will shatter her entire world. All this, set to a fantastic score from Giorgio Moroder, played off by Bowie performing “Cat People (Putting Out Fire.)”
