Legendary 20th Century English war poet Siegfried Sassoon’s life-long quest for personal salvation is the topic of this biopic, written and directed by Terence Davies. After being decorated for bravery during World War I, Sassoon returned home and became a vocal antiwar critic of the government, as well as a renowned poet. Adored by the aristocracy, Sassoon was secretly struggling as a closeted gay man. He embarked on affairs with several men, while attempting to conform to societal expectations through marriage and religion. His profound story is one of a troubled man seeking peace in a painful world.
