Barton Fink

Q&A with Writer and Film Critic Jordan Hoffman

Presented in 35mm

Barton Fink (John Turturro) is a young playwright in New York in 1941 who enjoys an overnight success with a drama celebrating the common man. Hollywood takes notice and enlists him to write wrestling pictures for Wallace Beery. Barton Fink chronicles his struggle with writer’s block, with Hollywood, and with the neighbor in his hotel (John Goodman) who shows Barton something about the darker side of wrestling, and of life.

Winner of the prestigious Cannes Palme d’Or in 1991

"Gnomic, claustrophobic, hallucinatory, just plain weird, it is the kind of movie critics can soak up thousands of words analyzing and cinephiles can soak up at least three espressos arguing their way through."
Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine
"A triumph for the offbeat, grimly funny brothers, it reveals in its mythic fashion the vagaries of the creative process that plague every artist."
Rita Kempley, Washington Post
