America, America

Presented on 35mm

Elia Kazan’s intimate epic is based on the life of the director’s immigrant uncle, following young Stavros (Stathis Giallelis), as he leaves war-torn Greece to begin a new life in the United States.  His transcontinental trek puts him in the path of both friends and adversaries, yet Stavros remains motivated by an undying faith in the better life that awaits in America. Kazan’s ambitious and intensely personal film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

"Elia Kazan drew from the experiences of his own uncle in this profound and exhilarating 19th-Century immigrant saga, made in 1963 and expressing passionately a love of this country."
Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
"The film has the elemental power of a classic immigrant story, revealing a young man’s single-minded, arduous journey to America through black-and-white images that evoke the country’s promise to the huddled masses."
Scott Tobias, A.V. Club

This film is part of the Immigration Nation series.
