Elia Kazan’s intimate epic is based on the life of the director’s immigrant uncle, following young Stavros (Stathis Giallelis), as he leaves war-torn Greece to begin a new life in the United States. His transcontinental trek puts him in the path of both friends and adversaries, yet Stavros remains motivated by an undying faith in the better life that awaits in America. Kazan’s ambitious and intensely personal film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
