At the outset of the film it appears that Ove (played by Rolf Lassgård) has given up on life. A retiree and recent widow with strict principles and a short fuse, Ove spends his days visiting his wife’s grave and enforcing neighborhood codes of conduct that only he cares about. Ove’s routine misery is interrupted by the arrival of new neighbors: a boisterous young family led by pregnant matriarch Parvenah (Bahar Pars, When Darkness Falls) whom Ove clashes with right away after she flattens his mailbox with her car. Despite a bumpy introduction, an unlikely friendship develops between them which helps to illuminate more about Ove’s past, his loves and heartbreaks, and ultimately opens a path for healing. Based on the best selling novel from author Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove offers lyrical storytelling encapsulating the gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it’s shared.
