1959: The Year That Changed Jazz

Live Performance by the Benny Benack III Quartet followed by a Dessert and Wine Reception!

The year 1959 was a revolutionary one for jazz, with four groundbreaking albums released by four masters of the form: Miles Davis (Kind of Blue), Dave Brubeck (Time Out), Charles Mingus (Mingus Ah Um), and Ornette Coleman (The Shape of Jazz to Come). Filmmaker Bernays takes us back to that pivotal year, building his story around the albums through fascinating footage of the jazz men in the studio and onstage and interviews with Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Lou Reed, Sue Mingus, Herbie Hancock, and others. (First screened, Jazz Sessions 2011)

There will be a dessert and wine reception in the Jane Peck Gallery following the live performance.

Trumpeter and vocalist Benny Benack III’s inventive and spirited improvising has made him a rising star in the jazz world and earned him a place on Wynton Marsalis’s list of the “Next Generation of Jazz Greats.” He’s won several major trumpet competitions and is lauded for his talents as a vocalist, composer, and arranger. Sought after as a trumpet soloist, he’s played in nearly every major big band, including the Christian McBride Big Band and the Mingus Big Band. He tours internationally and plays New York’s great jazz clubs. Equally at ease in the pop/cabaret world, he has toured with Josh Groban as his trumpet soloist, played the famed Cafe Carlyle with fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi, and headlined the Birdland Jazz Club alongside Anne Hampton Callaway. He brings his own quartet to celebrate 1959: The Year That Changed Jazz.

This film is part of the Jazz Sessions: Take 10 series.
