You can now pre-order a digital screening of Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow, which will play for a special one-night-only engagement on July 9, for only $14.99. You may begin viewing the film any time between 7:00 and 10:00 on the night of July 9. After you start your screening, you will have 4 hours to complete your viewing in a virtual screening room created just for patrons of the JBFC.
With each screening of First Cow purchased you’ll provide much-needed support to both the JBFC and A24—who will evenly split the revenue—as we navigate these uncharted waters.

Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women, Meek’s Cutoff) once again trains her perceptive and patient eye on the Pacific Northwest, this time evoking an authentically hardscrabble early nineteenth century way of life. A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro, The Big Short, Carol) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (a magnificent Orion Lee in a breakthrough performance) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow. From this simple premise, Reichardt constructs an interrogation of foundational Americana that recalls her earlier triumph Old Joy in its sensitive depiction of male friendship, yet is driven by a mounting suspense all its own. Reichardt again shows her distinct talent for depicting the peculiar rhythms of daily living and ability to capture the immense, unsettling quietude of rural America.
