Kurosawa Restored
Oct. 3–9, 2025
On presenting Kurosawa’s Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1990, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg called him “our greatest living filmmaker” and “one of the few true visionaries ever to work in our medium.”
Akira Kurosawa remains an omnipresent force in the history of cinema, with his influence as visible today as ever. Spike Lee’s Highest to Lowest recently reimagined Kurosawa’s High and Low for a new generation, and here at the JBFC we revisited the original with a special one-week-only run in August.
This fall, we invite you to go even deeper with a five-film retrospective that spans genres and decades, featuring Kurosawa’s two greatest collaborators: Toshiro Mifune, who appears in four of the films, and Takashi Shimura, who appears in all five. Each title reflects a different facet of Kurosawa’s vision, and together they form a rare cinematic event as five restored masterpieces return to the big screen where they belong.
