Hello, I Must Be Going
This is a post by JBFC Marketing Intern Stacy Zakalik
On July 18 and 19, The Burns will be showing the Marx Brothers’ Animal Crackers, a fun film for the whole family to enjoy. Starring the now classic Marx Brothers, Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo, the film is one of the best reviewed and most remembered of the comedy troupe.
Groucho Marx plays an intrepid explorer named Captain Spaulding, who has just come home to the United States after a trek to Africa, and is having a party thrown in his celebration. Of course, this being a Marx Brothers film, things goes wrong right off the bat. The brothers stir up trouble from the very beginning, including Captain Spaulding himself, who doesn’t appreciate this stuffy party in his honor.
Harpo plays the Professor, who, incidentally, has very deep pockets and a knack for comedic timing. Chico plays a singer, Signor Emanuel Ravelli. Zeppo, of course, plays the straight man to the other brothers’ comedic personalities, and his character is named Horatio Jamison. It also stars Lillian Roth and Margaret Dumont as party guests.
There is a reason this film is considered one of the best of the Marx Brothers. All the brothers bring their A-game, concerning acting and comedic timing to their roles. The music is catchy, with famous songs such as “Hello, I Must Be Going†and “Hooray For Captain Spaulding.†The script is hilarious, with now-classic jokes, like that told by Spaulding to his enraptured audience: “One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don’t know.â€
The best part, of course, is that this film is family-friendly. Adults and children alike can enjoy the great one-liners and witty banter of a classic film.
So, come take your family to this special Burns event, with the hope that you’ll enjoy every moment of it. Just don’t invite Captain Spaulding to your next party!
