{Cinemania Student Critic} Landfill Harmonic

By JBFC Cinemania Student Critic Ty Amsterdam

Landfill Harmonic is an uplifting documentary that has such an incredible storyline, it could almost seem fictional! The film takes place in Cateura, a town in Paraguay where most of the residents try to find work at the garbage dump. We follow Favio Cháves, who decided to inspire the children of Cateura by taking in pupils and teaching them how to play instruments. However, the families in Cateura live in a place where a violin costs more than a home. They were able to solve this issue by creatively transforming the garbage that surrounded them into instruments. Throughout the movie, the main theme of hope is recycled. And just when you think you know what the whole film is about, there are plenty of surprises and detailed sub-stories that make it even more interesting. As I sat in the plush chair of the movie theater, indulging myself in popcorn and soda, this film, that brings the diversity of the world to the forefront, showed me a new perspective on what happiness truly is. Landfill Harmonic is a movie that all families should see together.

Landfill Harmonic is currently available on HBO Go with subscription.
