Join us for a unique evening to meet our 2018 Greenhouse Artist-in-Residence Hana Mire and Visiting Filmmaker Ekin Çalışır. We will show clips and discuss their work-in-progress feature documentaries Nation’s Hope and Beats-N-Pieces, which emerged from the 2017 Greenhouse Documentary Development Program.
Nation’s Hope (Rajada Dalka), is a character-driven portrait of the Somali Women’s National Basketball team struggling to survive. The film illuminates the power of basketball, a once-beloved Somali national sport, to reunite and reinspire a nation fractured by 27 years of civil war. In a country where strict gender roles and Islamic tenets increasingly restrict women’s rights, this team personifies the hopes and aspirations of generations of Somali women.
Beats-N-Pieces, a coming of age story about teenage hip hop dancers, including a Turkish Gypsy and a Russian refugee, who live on different sides of the last divided capital of the world, Nicosia in Cyprus.
