“Women in Sink whips up quite the lather over women, race and identity in Israel through an alluringly rosy lens. And like a good spa treatment, it leaves you wanting more.” (Haaretz)
Women in Sink: Emerging Israeli director Iris Zaki takes a job washing hair at one of the most popular salons in Haifa. The owner, like many of her clients, is Arab-Christian, but her loyal clientele also includes Jewish and Muslim women. Eager to hear and record their reflections about life, family, and politics, Zaki mounts her camera above the washbasin where she works and records their candid, sometimes unexpected, conversations. By getting Arabs and Jews alike to literally let down their hair, she has created a beautiful short film that reminds us of our shared humanity. Film details: 2015. 36 m. Iris Zacki. “As funny as it is suspenseful and moving, the film tells a complex story suffused with vibrant color and strong characters.” (Midnight East)
Partner with the Enemy: Co-directors Chen Shelach and Duki Dror take us into the ever-fraught Israeli-Palestinian conflict by following two gutsy women entrepreneurs—one Israeli and one Palestinian—building a business together. Despite social pressures, anti-normalization currents, and a male-dominated industry, they create a successful logistics company that helps Palestinian businessmen navigate the everyday absurdities of Israeli control of the West Bank. Can their business and friendship endure in the face of their daily challenges? Film details: 2015. 60 m. Duki Dror/Chen Shelach. Israel. with subtitles. NR.
