Wim Wenders Shorts Program

An actor runs through the same shot five times holding a gun, each time set to a different color treatment. A German city wakes up with the sun and closes up shop with the rising of the moon. Student demonstrators get approached by a new regime of police officers. A hit man botches a job, set to classic 1960s rock and roll. American rock albums make up the soundtrack for a road trip through Germany. These are the magical short films of Wim Wenders. The shorts a director makes on his or her way to producing features can be used as a way to see not only the building blocks of a particular director’s style, but also volunteer hints at his or her propensity for filming certain subject matter. With this short film package, we’re offered a rare glimpse into the mind of Wim Wenders, where we see the seeds of his cinematic interest in things such as the lifeblood of cities, lost souls, American music, and, most importantly, the open road. Plus: An extra film showcasing Wenders working in early 1980s New York City where Francis Ford Coppola makes a very loud phone call.

This film is part of the Wim Wenders: Portraits Along the Road series.
