Who's That Girl

Presented on 35mm

Released during the height of Madonna’s cultural conquest of multiple mediums, Who’s That Girl followed the breakout success of Desperately Seeking Susan with this 80’s spin on the classic screwball comedy. Four years in jail for a crime she didn’t commit haven’t dampened the spunk or spirit of Nikki Finn (Madonna). Determined to clear her name, she wreaks delirious and delightful havoc on New York City, and particularly on Griffin Dunne’s buttoned-up affianced attorney, whose uptight demeanor proves to be the perfect foil for Nikki’s chaotic charisma. Featuring a soundtrack of vintage pop written for the film, including Madonna’s hit title track.

"As the WASP-y sleeping prince, Mr. Dunne gives the most stylishly comic performance of a career that's been largely underrated by the public. Though he seems to be Madonna's foil, he provides the movie with its backbone, even in its most ludicrous moments."
Vincent Canby, The New York Times
"The movie takes on ideas that tend to be hit or miss, but the direct scores are more gratifying than most because of the manic risk taking involved. Every character, no matter how minor, is treated like a wild card, as if to ensure that Madonna remains the only ace in sight."
Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

This film is part of the All Dunne: A Griffin Dunne Retrospective series.
