Tulip Fever

In 17th Century Amsterdam, set against the backdrop of the Tulip Wars, an orphaned girl (Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) is forcibly married to a rich and powerful merchant (Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds). She is deeply unhappy but their “arrangement” saves her from a life of poverty. After her husband commissions a portrait, she begins a passionate affair with the painter (Dane DeHaan, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, A Cure for Wellness) who struggles to make ends meet. Seeking to escape her husband’s increasingly possessive grasp, the two lovers risk everything and enter the frenzied tulip bulb market, with the hope that the right bulb will make a fortune and buy their freedom. Directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) with a screenplay by Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love, Anna Karenina), Tulip Fever is a visually stunning period piece with a star-studded supporting cast, including Judi Dench, Zach Galifianakis, and Cara Delevingne.
