There Will Be Blood

Presented on 35mm

A sprawling epic of family, faith, power, and oil, There Will Be Blood is set on the incendiary frontier of California’s turn-of-the-century petroleum boom, where silver miner turned oil tycoon Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis) uses his adopted son HW to project the image of an earnest family-man as he swindles local landowners into selling him their valuable properties for a pittance. However, local preacher Eli Sunday suspects Plainview’s motives and intentions, beginning a slow-burning feud which threatens both of their lives. Adapted from the novel Oil! by Upton Sinclair.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterful portrait of American greed received eight nominations at the 80th Academy Awards (where it was tied with No Country for Old Men—also playing as a part of this series—for most nominations of the evening), before going on to win two awards, including Best Actor for Daniel Day Lewis.

"For a story that's all about the harnessing of fateful chthonic forces, Paul Thomas Anderson has dug deeper than ever before, and struck black gold."
Dana Stevens, Slate
"This may be an extremely bold statement to make, but there hasn’t been such an amazing character study in film since Citizen Kane. I honestly can’t praise it enough. From the opening to the ghastly ending, this film will sit in the depths of your stomach for some time to come."
Zack Haddad , Film Threat

This film is part of the The New Classics series.
