A sprawling epic of family, faith, power, and oil, There Will Be Blood is set on the incendiary frontier of California’s turn-of-the-century petroleum boom, where silver miner turned oil tycoon Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis) uses his adopted son HW to project the image of an earnest family-man as he swindles local landowners into selling him their valuable properties for a pittance. Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterful portrait of American greed received eight nominations at the 80th Academy Awards (where it was tied with No Country for Old Men—also playing as a part of this series—for most nominations of the evening), before going on to win two awards, including Best Actor for Daniel Day Lewis.
