Based on true events, The Zookeeper’s Wife stars Jessica Chastain (The Help, Zero Dark Thirty) as Antonina Żabińska, a woman who, along with her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh, The Broken Circle Breakdown), owns and operates the flourishing Warsaw Zoo in 1939 Poland. When Poland is invaded by the Germans, the husband and wife are forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl, Goodbye Lenin, Inglourious Basterds). Horrified by the Nazi’s treatment of the Jewish people, the Żabińskis work with the Resistance, engineering a plan to use their zoo as a safe haven, and saving hundreds from the atrocities of the Warsaw Ghetto. Adapted from Diane Ackerman’s book of the same name, filmmaker Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland, USA) delivers a moving and beautifully realized portrait of one woman’s uncompromising compassion.
