François Truffaut was quoted as saying that he wouldn’t have made this film without Isabelle Adjani, whom he snatched from the stage of the Comédie-Francaise. Based on the memoirs of Victor Hugo’s youngest daughter, it’s a story of unrequited love and the slow descent into madness. With this sensitive performance, Adjani earned her first nomination for the Best Actress Oscar, among other nods, making her the youngest nominee ever at the time.
