The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Book Talk & Signing with Author Christopher McKittrick

In The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, director John Ford brings us to the lawless frontier village of Shinbone, a town plagued by a larger-than-life nemesis, Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). James Stewart plays the bungling but charming big-city lawyer determined to rid Shinbone of Valance, who finds that he has an unlikely ally in the form of a rugged, local rancher (John Wayne). The two men also share the same love interest (Vera Miles). When the final showdown becomes inevitable, one of the two will attempt to get the gunman.

After the screening, join author Christopher McKittrick in conversation about his new book Vera Miles: The Hitchcock Blonde Who Got Away. Copies of the book will be available for sale courtesy of The Village Bookstore.

"There's much to say about it; the simplest is that it's both the most romantic of Westerns and the greatest American political movie."
Richard Brody, The New Yorker
"John Ford regularly made such clear-eyed, unsentimental assessments of the Old West and the lies that forged its mythology that one may wonder how the concept of a 'revisionist western' ever took root when the original was already so bleak."
Jake Cole, Slant Magazine

  • Christopher McKittrick is the author of Vera Miles: The Hitchcock Blonde Who Got Away (2025), Howling to the Moonlight on a Hot Summer Night: The Tale of the Stray Cats (2024), Can't Give It Away on Seventh Avenue: The Rolling Stones and New York City (2019), and Somewhere You Feel Free: Tom Petty and Los Angeles (2020). McKittrick has appeared on HLN's How It Really Happened and Fox News Digital, and is also a regular contributor on podcasts and radio programs concerning film, music, and pop culture.
  • Vera Miles: The Hitchcock Blonde Who Got Away
    • Vera Miles appeared in three of the most critically acclaimed films of all time—The Searchers (1956), Psycho (1960), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)—and was signed to an exclusive personal contract by iconic filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock, who intended to make her his next big star. However, she was forced to step away from the leading role in Hitchcock’s 1958 film Vertigo. Miles's illustrious film and television career spanned nearly fifty years in Hollywood, and yet she is still considered one of the most unsung film actresses of her era. Vera Miles: The Hitchcock Blonde Who Got Away is the first full-length book about the talented performer's life and extensive body of work, and amplifies the voice of this remarkable and prolific actress who was far more than just a footnote in Hitchcock's film legacy.
