Former outlaw Jake Wade (played by Robert Taylor) is now a reformed town sheriff attempting to live peacefully with his fiance. However, his past comes back to haunt him in the form of an old partner, Clint Hollister (Richard Widmark), looking for his share of their last heist, which Wade has long since hidden. Hollister begins stalking Wade, threatening to unravel his new life.
