Directed by Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and adapted from Rick Moody’s acclaimed novel of the same name, The Ice Storm is one of the all-time great films about the malaise at the heart of the American suburbs. Set in 1973 during Thanksgiving weekend in suburban Connecticut, the film centers on two middle-class families who are forced to come to terms with their interpersonal disconnection and thinly-veiled despair, as a historically frigid ice storm descends upon their idyllic town.
With stunning cinematography from Frederick Elmes, in the first of his three collaborations with Ang Lee (followed by 1999’s Ride With the Devil and 2003’s Hulk), The Ice Storm features a formidable ensemble of actors including Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, and Sigourney Weaver.
In celebration of Frederick Elmes’ work on Father Mother Sister Brother, we are pleased to highlight four classic films shot by him and directed by such luminaries as Jim Jarmusch (Night on Earth—35mm), Ang Lee (The Ice Storm—35mm), Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche, New York—35mm), and David Lynch (Eraserhead).
