The Fly

This Independence Day weekend, leave the hot dogs and fireworks at home. Instead, celebrate your independence by freeing yourself from the stagnant human form and watch David Cronenberg’s transformative body horror classic: The Fly.

When scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) completes his teleportation device, he decides to test its abilities on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a housefly slips in during the process, leading to a merger of man and insect. Initially, Brundle appears to have undergone a successful teleportation, but the fly’s cells begin to take over his body. As he becomes increasingly fly-like, Brundle’s girlfriend (Geena Davis) is horrified as the person she once loved deteriorates into a monster.

"A gross-your-eyes-out horror movie that is also the year's most poignant romance."
Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine
"The Fly seizes on our ingrained, instinctive horror of sexuality, the sense of shame that our fundamentally puritanical society can't help but teach us, and by confirming our worst fears, helps us, for a moment, to move beyond them."
Dave Kehr, Chicago Tribune

This film is part of the After Hours series.
