I rarely ever stand on my chair and shout that people must see a film, but after I saw The Fear of 13 at the True/False Documentary Film Festival last month I vowed that I would do just that. There were 1700 people in the audience, completely spellbound, hovering between hope and horror, listening to this incredible true story of a convicted murderer on death row in Pennsylvania. It follows the story of Nick—I’ll tell you no more, and don’t look it up! It’s one of those experiences that you simply must have yourself. He’s a charismatic, hypnotic storyteller with an extraordinary story to tell, and it’s told—cinematically—like an engrossing thriller. So that’s as much as I’ll offer. Just come. You won’t regret it. –Brian Ackerman, Programming Director
The Fear of 13 is “a haunting exercise in storytelling” (Total Film). After spending 20 years on a Pennsylvania Death Row, an inmate takes the unprecedented step of requesting his own execution. So begins this thrilling, complex, riveting tale of a man who finds himself accused of a capital crime at the age of 20. By the veteran documentary director David Sington (In the Shadow of the Moon), it’s a singular achievement that plays like intense narrative fiction, as we sit and listen to Nick unfold his incredible story. He has “the compelling charisma and confidence of the self-taught. You won’t regret spending 90 minutes alone with him.” (Time Out)
