The Beast

Across three different time periods, Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) continually falls in love with different incarnations of Louis (George MacKay). Visually audacious director Bertrand Bonello (Saint Laurent, Nocturama) fashions his most accomplished film to date: a sci-fi epic, inspired by Henry James’ turn-of-the-century novella, The Beast in the Jungle.

Suffused with mounting dread and a haunting sense of mystery, The Beast is punctuated by a career-defining, three-role performance by Léa Seydoux.

"Few equal (Henry) James in his ability to evoke the milieus of the late-19th to early-20th centuries that constrict so many of his characters. And Bonello has a no less uncanny ability to utilize the burdensome signs and wonders of his moment for maximum insight and agitation."
Keith Uhlich, Slant Magazine
"The film’s true power stems from and speaks to our specifically present condition as people beset on all sides by the fears of our own imagination. By the trauma of something that already happened, or the terror of something that might."
David Ehrlich, IndieWire
