Novelist and journalist Mordecai Richler was best known as a chronicler of Jewish life in the Mile End neighborhood of Montreal. This film adaptation of his classic coming-of-age novel The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz stars Richard Dreyfuss in his first–and one of his best–performances as the ambitious, endlessly energetic, and frequently obnoxious young hustler. Constantly looking for ways to make money, he is a waiter, taxi driver, drug smuggler, forger, pinball-machine owner, and even becomes a filmmaker. (His first production, Happy Bar-Mitzvah, Bernie! is a wild experimental film). Rarely screened, this forgotten gem will be shown in a restored version from the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film will be preceded by a screening of Caroline Leaf’s beautiful animated film The Street, based on a story by Mordecai Richler about a Jewish family living in Montreal, taking care of their ailing matriarch.
