Sorry to Bother You

In an alternate reality of present-day Oakland, California, telemarketer Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield, Get Out, FX’s Atlanta) finds himself in a macabre universe after he discovers a magical key that leads to material glory. Cassius soon falls under the spell of Steve Lift (Armie Hammer, Call Me by Your Name), a cocaine-snorting CEO who offers him a salary beyond his wildest dreams. Cassius must decide whether financial success is worth sacrificing both his ideals and the love of his life, his free-thinking, anti-capitalist girlfriend, Detroit (Tessa Thompson, Dear White People, Annihilation). Directed by legendary Oakland musician Boots Riley, Sorry to Bother You is a fearlessly ambitious, genre-defying wild ride that firmly establishes Riley as one of cinema’s most exciting new voices.

Boots Riley grew up in Oakland, where he studied film at SFSU before dropping out in favor of a major label recording deal. He spent two decades as leader of The Coup, a radical funk/punk/hip-hop band, where he penned six albums to widespread critical acclaim. The Coup’s seventh yet unreleased album, “The Sun Exploding,” is the soundtrack to Sorry to Bother You, Riley's first feature film. It is his hope to be a part of creating a new movement in film.

It works fine as an outrageous comedy, but the perceptive commentary will likely give it staying power. This is the fearless satire that America desperately needs right now.
